The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair was a cultural touchstone that still influences our world today. Many important figures like The Wizard of Oz author Frank Baum, social activist Helen Keller, and our own Milton Hershey attended and were greatly influenced by this historic event. “The Chicago World’s Fair is where Mr. Hershey saw and ordered his first two pieces of chocolate-making equipment and boldly declared that ‘caramels are a fad, chocolate is permanent’,” said Elizabeth Lindsay, manager of education and public programs at The Hershey Story Museum.
